How do you get salt stains out of your ugg boots?.?

My boots are light brown and they are stained with salt. The salted areas are all hard and around the edges of those areas, they bron has started to turn white. Do you have any way to get the salt off? I tried to wet it, but I don't want to ruin the boots. HELP!
