How can i impress with AFL rules ect.?

My partner is OBSESSED with AFL and i really want to get into it too, cause i know i'll be very bored sitting there watching without completely knowing whats going on. i know the basics - handball and all that but i don't know is there any tips anyone can give me to make me get into it a bit more?? PLEASE and thankyou!
