What would happen if, when arrested, i refused to tell the police my name and had no ID on me?

In the uk if you were caught in possession of an illegal narcotic by the police but had no ID on you and refused to speak or answer any questions at all put to you what would happen? presumably i can't be held indefinitely or forced to give my name under torture. if i am charged then who is the case from HM brought against? given that prior convictions could not be taken into account could this ever be a good strategy?
